Degree structure and individual study plan (HOPS)
A ‘structure’ in the sense used here is simply a list of units with an explanation of how they are grouped into modules.
Each department has also appended study-related information to the main subject structures. (The term ‘structure’ replaces the term ‘malliHOPS’ (template HOPS) used in the previous curriculum.)
You can find the structures (2018-2019) here.
You can find the structures (1.8.2019 ->) here.
When starting a degree programme, the student must draw up an individual study plan (known by its Finnish acronym as HOPS). The HOPS must be based on the current Sibelius Academy curriculum and any transitional provisions that may be in force. The purpose of the HOPS is to list the studies by completing which the student may attain the learning outcomes defined in the curriculum.
Individual study path
The student’s HOPS must also include the student’s individual choices for studies that best support the student’s evolution and growth as an artist, an educator or a scholar.
The curriculum allows for a variety of individual study pathways, for instance in the following ways:
* The main subject studies for both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees include optional studies among which the student may select those most suitable for him/her. The student may also complete studies fulfilling the compulsory learning outcomes under his/her main subject outside the Sibelius Academy. However, the proficiency examination and maturity essay must be completed at the Sibelius Academy.
* Elective studies must be included in the degree: at least 10 cr in the Bachelor’s degree and at least 30 cr in the Master’s degree. These may include a predefined secondary subject module or a selection of units individually selected by the student to suit his/her individual study pathway.
The Sibelius Academy decision concerning the individual study plan can be found here (decision document in Artsi, requires logon).
Previous studies or competence acquired otherwise may be acknowledged and credited as part of a degree, module or unit completed at the Sibelius Academy. The underlying principle is that the student should not have to study things at the Sibelius Academy that he/she already knows. (The procedure of acknowledgement and accreditation is known by its Finnish acronym as AHOT.)
Credited earlier competence may be based on studies completed at another university or competence acquired by means other than formal training (e.g. work experience, workplace training, leisure pursuits).
Decisions to credit previous studies or otherwise acquired competence must also be entered in the HOPS.
The Sibelius Academy decision concerning credited substituting studies (AHOT) can be found here (decision document in Artsi, requires logon).
