Profiency demonstration, maturity essay and compulsory language studies

Proficiency demonstration

With a proficiency demonstration, the student shows that he/she has acquired the capabilities required in the learning outcomes specified for his/her main subject and is able to apply his/her learning creatively and to further improve his/her skills. The proficiency demonstration is a compulsory part of the degree; studies completed elsewhere cannot be substituted for it.

An artistic proficiency demonstration, or part of it, may take the form of a composition or a public performance, depending on the student’s main subject. A public performance for completing a proficiency demonstration in whole or in part is referred to as a ‘bachelor’s recital’ or ‘master’s recital’.

Maturity essay

The student must write a maturity essay which demonstrates conversance with the topic of the thesis and a command of the Finnish or Swedish language. The way in which the maturity essay is to be completed varies from one degree programme to another: The student is to write the maturity essay in a written communication unit under his/her main subject, integrated into another unit, or at a seminar.

The maturity essay is a compulsory part of the degree; studies completed elsewhere cannot be substituted for it. A description of the maturity essay may be found separately under each degree programme or main subject in the curriculum.
