The Sibelius Academy as a learning environment

The term ‘learning environment’ here means the community, procedures, facilities and equipment of the Sibelius Academy.

The learning environment at the Sibelius Academy changes and evolves as needed, promotes interaction, supports a variety of pedagogical approaches and encourages students to learn in new ways both within the school and in various networks.

All genres of music are in harmonious coexistence and equal at the Sibelius Academy. Good practices are shared among all genres of music to improve everyone’s skills.

The learning environment at the Sibelius Academy is international and multicultural. Teachers and students from various cultures work together and learn from each other.

The Sibelius Academy is extensively networked with other significant music universities. This networking facilitates student and teacher exchanges, shared degree programmes and artistic collaboration projects. Networking is also part of our quality management efforts undertaken in interaction with other music universities.

Uniarts Helsinki offers its students the potential to understand similarities and differences between branches of the arts and to acquire competence in fields beyond their own.

The learning environment at the Sibelius Academy is open to connections with working life.  Many departments provide students with opportunities to apply their learning in outside contexts, such as in schools, churches, orchestras, choirs or music institutes. These contacts and alumni cooperation promote graduate employment and, on the other hand, invite input from the field to aid in education development.

Students can influence their learning environment by giving feedback on tuition and on how the university operates. Student representatives in administrative bodies and various working groups of the Sibelius Academy help improve the school for their part. Teachers can influence the learning environment through tuition planning, for instance.
